Seb Brasington, 50 in French

Hi there, my name is Sebastian and I just graduated from Scotch College. I’ve always been a methodical yet quiet worker in the class and over my time at school I developed various study techniques to achieve at my maximum.

I never really expected a high level of success, but I always endeavor to do my best in everything and hard work produced a set of results I am ecstatic with.

My journey in French was far from smooth sailing. I began in Year 7 feeling daunted by the more naturally talented and experienced people around me. However, I stuck at it and uncovered various techniques and strategies to get ahead of the pack. By Year 12 I was confident in my own system for studying and I was rewarded with a score I never thought possible.

Over the course of 10 lectures plus a range of personal and small group tutoring I intend to share with you the various skills and strategies I picked up in order to elevate you to the highest possible level of achievement. Be it how to plan your writing, finding impressive vocab and phrases or preparing for oral assessments, I hope that the experience and knowledge I can offer you will maximise your potential to in VCE French.

Lecture 1: Extension and Immersion for High Level Success in a Language

The Key to Success:

The only way to properly enhance your language skills from an immediate to advanced level is through living and breathing the language in question. This will help you excel in all areas and skillsets of VCE LOTE.

Daily Immersion Activities

This can range from putting your phone in French to listening to a podcast on the way to school. There are various techniques and specific websites and podcasts I can share with you to help you make your language of choice a part of your daily routine.

Finding a Language Partner

The best way to really get an insight into the world and culture of your language is talk to the people that belong to it. I can offer you partners to converse with in French and tactics to maximise the benefits you can gain from the people around you.

Lecture 2: Skillset/SAC 1; Writing

Complex and Detailed Writing

There is more to writing in French than initially meets the eye. Examiners will be greatly impressed by the use ofsophisticated and complex vocab and phrases – both of which I can help you find (much of which is in my topic-specific Quizlets) and implement effectively in your writing.

Structure and Planning

Both of these are vital to success in writing. Not only can I offer practice plans and writing pieces that have been fully marked by an Ex-VCE Exam Marker but I can also provide checklists and mental systems to ensure that your writing is consistently scoring highly.

Satisfying the Text Type

Not only is this an intrinsic part of the VCE marking criteria but it is also often overlooked in the classroom. I can offer a complete set of notes on text types and extra tips to make sure no marks are lost. A good use of text type will also have a positive psychological effect on the marker since LOTE Writing pieces are marked very subjectively.
